JmIRC and JedIRC: The Use

Basically how to use both JmIRC and JmIRC is the same. follow these instructions:

Option -> Profiles -> Add new profile.

Profile Name: Call it whatever you want.

Nick: The nickname you'd like people to see.

Alternative Nick: The nickname you'll use if your Nick is already in use.

IRC server: The IRC server you'd like to connect to. Shadowfire is perhaps the most popular in South Africa. Try using shikari.shadowfire.org or cookies.shadowfire.org. irc.shadowfire.org directs you to a random Shadowfire server.

IRC server port: This is best left as the default, 6667.

Channels: The channels that you'd like to automatically join when you sign in.

Username: Just a name people will see if they try to view your details.

Real Name: Just a name people will see if they try to view your details. Some people use a quote, or their asl.

Server password: Leave this blank.

Creating a profile should be enough to get you set up. If things don't work, or you want to customize things further, then play around with the other settings. You can change whether or not you want to see Time Stamps, or to see different font colours and formatting (though these may only be typed on a computer), among other more complicated options.

Got problems? just write our question in the shoutbox, and I'll help if I can. Like the concept of jmIRC, but find it too lightweight? There are many other IRC phone clients, but they require you to purchase them. The best that I've seen is WirelessIRC (Symbian only!) but you can also get it free, is a great piece of software.

Some common IRC commands (which may or may not work in your particular IRC client): /nick (Change your nick to NewNick) /list (List all channels on a server with the same name as the given parameter. Warning: There may be thousands of channels...) /join (Join a channel. Channel names begin with a #)
